Biography
António is a Portuguese surrealist painter based in Lisbon, whose work is a constant search for balance between structure and fluidity, the tangible and the dreamlike. His art is shaped by a deep fascination with the symbiosis between abstract shapes and organic forms—his way of making sense of the world.
His journey began in childhood, where he found solace in drawing and painting, later refining his skills through relentless self-exploration and early experiences in a painting atelier. Influenced by great Portuguese masters such as Almada Negreiros and Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, António explored various mediums, from watercolor to Indian ink, before settling on oil and acrylic as his preferred tools of expression.
Over the years, he immersed himself in the study of composition and color, drawing inspiration from impressionist painters like Monet. However, the need for a more personal and original artistic voice led him to break away from traditional styles, embracing a more instinctive and surrealist approach. By weaving together geometric and abstract elements, his paintings seek to evoke emotions and intangible aspects of existence, transforming them into visual language.
For António, painting is not just about creating images—it is about exploring perception itself. Each piece is an invitation to step into a world where reality bends, reshaped by subconscious forces and instinctive gestures, offering viewers a glimpse into the unknown.
